Smokestack Lightning- SCGZ
Skin Contact Gewurztraminer
Smokestack Lightning is an early 50’s Delta Blues track originally played by Howlin’ Wolf. It’s an edgy song and genre that uses minimal input to create raw expressions.
We like this kind of creativity. It’s easy to understand, transparent and endearing. We are inspired by it and would love to emulate the footsteps of these characters.
Smokestack Lightning explores white skin contact fermentation (orange wine) from grapes grown on stunning Hawke’s Bay soils. Sympathetically, this wine walks a tightrope between raw vineyard expressions, vintage and style.
Orange fruits, savoury, spice, florals and ginger.
This fresh aromatic precedes a gentle and dry mouthfeel which flows across the palate. A light tannin/acid grip adds to the savoury backbone of this wine as it finishes with a slight grapefruit bitterness.
Only 864 bottles produced.

Details
Mangatahi
The Mangatahi vineyard sits on ancient river terraces formed by the braided Ngaruroro River. Planted in 2006, the terraces are made up of greywacke stone with a topsoil based of volcanic ash, alluvial gravels and silt loams.
Located inland and between two mountain ranges the organically farmed vineyard benefits from low rainfall, warm days and cool nights.
Season
The 2022 vintage started with a warm spring and early summer. In late January the growing season turned towards a La Nina pattern with cooler weather leading to fine and restrained flavours.
Winemaking
Gewurztraminer 100%
Handpicked fruit was destemmed directly to an open fermenter. After a few days, wild fermentation spontaneously started and progressed for 18 days with a maximum temperature of 27 deg C.
Everyday during fermentation, the grapes were rolled gently to extract colour, flavour and tannin. Around day 24 a lid was placed on the top of the grapes to protect it from oxygen.
The wine stayed on skins for a total of 70 days as it went through Malolactic fermentation and the flavours evolved. It was then pressed to old puncheons (500L) to age at low temperatures and without sulphur until it’s December bottling.
No fining or filtration. Minimal sulphur was added two weeks before bottling.
